Senior pitcher/designated player Erin Stremsterfer went 1-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and three runs batted in while striking out 12 batters to lead Southern Illinois University to a 8-0 win over Drake (6-11-1) Saturday in Missouri Valley Conference softball action at IAW Fields.
For Stremsterfer, her three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning marked her second of the season as she improved to 9-2 on the mound as well.
SIU wasted no time in jumping all over Drake early as Haley Viefhaus doubled to center and Amanda Rexroat walked to put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the first. Following a Julie Meier groudout to second, Stremsterfer reached on an error by Bulldog shortstop Jamie Waterman which scored Viefhaus and Rexroat to give the Dawgs a 2-0 lead. Jen Guenther then stepped in and singled to center driving home Stremsterfer and just like that, SIU was up 3-0.
The Salukis scored another run in the fourth when Marta Viefhaus legged out an infield single to second which scored Stremsterfer who previously reached on a Drake error.
Up 4-0 with runners on the corners in the sixth, Stremsterfer hit a rocket to centerfield which cleared an estimated 225 feet to give SIU a 7-0 lead. Still not finished, M. Viefhaus then beat out another infield single to bring home Guenther as the Dawgs went on to the 8-0 shutout.
M. Viefhaus was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to help pace SIU's offensive attack as the Salukis combined for eight hits on the afternoon.
The Salukis, now 12-7, 1-0 on the year, will close out their three-game series with the Bulldogs on Sunday in a noon doubleheader at IAW Fields.
