The Southern Illinois University Carbondale baseball team will be holding its fifth annual Saluki Baseball Fish Fry/Memorabilia Auction on Friday, April 13 at the Carbondale Civic Center beginning at 5 p.m.
"This is one method of trying to raise money to supplement our budget. It's an idea that Clark Gyure, a friend of our program came up with several years ago and it's taken off from there," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head baseball coach.
The money raised helps assist Callahan in a variety of areas in the SIU baseball program.
"When we raise money we use it for field renovations, uniforms, equipment purchases, travel and other needs for our program. It's become a community event that we're proud of. We have people contacting us all year to find out when the fish fry is and I'm excited it's this week. Every year the people who attend have a lot of fun. We serve dinner from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and then we have the memorabilia auction," added Callahan.
The memorabilia auction which will have over 80 items up for grab, including some high profile items and baseball tickets will start at 8 p.m.
"We have some very unique items every year. Some of the more notable items are the Curt Warner and Marshall Faulk (St. Louis Rams) autographed footballs, Jason Giambi (Oakland A's) and Jose Canseco (free agent) autographed bats, baseballs from coach Derrick Shelton (New York Yankees) autographed by Yankee players Chuck Knoublauch, Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and Derek Jeter," stated Callahan. "We have an autographed Rick Pitino NBA ball. We also have some regular items like the Jim Thome (Cleveland Indians), Chipper Jones (Atlanta Braves) and Richie Sexson (Milwaukee Brewers) autographed bats and tickets to St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers games."
The event is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 12 and under. Carry out meals are available. The $6.00 meal includes an all-you-can-eat fish dinner, fixings, deserts and all-you-can-drink soda. For more information, call the Saluki Baseball Office at (618) 453-2802 or 453-3794.
