Peoria, Ill.--Southern Illinois University Carbondale (17-35, 10-21 MVC) ended its Missouri Valley Conference season with a 10-6 win over Bradley University (16-34, 7-19) in game one of a scheduled doubleheader on Sunday at Pete Vonachen Stadium at Meinen Field. Game two was rained out after three innings with SIU leading 11-5.
The Salukis took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cory Newman scored on a wild pitch. Bradley came back to score three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead before SIU scored nine unanswered runs to take a 10-3 lead.
In the third inning Jeff Stanek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run, Justin Maurath's ground ball pushed across a run and Dane Kerley singled in a run for a 4-3 lead.
Roman Schooley singled in a run in the fourth for a 5-3 lead before the Salukis broke the game open in the fifth. Scott Hankey's double, Dustin Downs' sacrifice fly, Luke Nelson?s single, Schooley's single and Stanek's single drove in five runs to put the game away.
Josh Latimer (3-7) pitched five innings to get the win. He allowed four earned runs (five total), on seven hits, struck out two and walked one.
Bradley ace Steve Ellis (3-6) suffered the loss allowing all ten Saluki runs (eight earned), 12 hits, struck out six and walked one in the loss.
Nelson (4-for-5, RBI, three runs), Schooley (2-for-3, two-RBIs, run) and Newman (2-for-5, three runs) led SIU's 13-hit attack.
In game two, Newman led off the game with a home run which was followed by a Nelson homer. The back to back home runs were part of the SIU six run first inning. After Bradley cut the lead to 6-4 against starter Ryan Aird in the bottom of the first, the Salukis added five runs in the third inning, led by a monster two-run home run by Schooley, but the lightning and rain came after the bottom of the third and the game was canceled after a 20 minute delay.
The Salukis will wrap up their season with a three-game series against the University of Tennessee-Martin on May 12-13 at Abe Martin Field.
