Omaha, Neb.--Creighton University hit four home runs en route to a 10-5, 6-2 sweep over Southern Illinois University Saturday in a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader at CU Sports Complex.
Creighton pounded Saluki ace Erin Stremsterfer for nine hits and nine runs to win the opening game before tagging Katie Kloess for six runs - four earned - in the nightcap.
Having entered the weekend with a 0.68 earned run average giving up just 24 earned runs in 248 innings, Stremsterfer gave up nine runs in the first game, while lasting only 3.2 innings. In addition, she pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in the second game.
Stremsterfer and Hopkins paced the Dawgs offensively as each drove in two runs in the first game. Stremsterfer also added to her SIU record for career home runs in the third inning.
With the two losses, the Salukis finish the 2001 regular season with an overall record of 35-17, 17-9 in the MVC, and will enter next week's league tournament as the No. 3 seed. SIU will begin play in the Valley's six-team double elimination tournament on Thursday, May 10 against fourth-seeded Creighton at 5 p.m.
