Maurath and Schooley Named All-MVC

Southern Illinois University Carbondale received some good news when two Salukis were named to the 2001 All-Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Team. Senior designated hitter Roman Schooley was named second-team all-conference and junior outfielder Justin Maurath was named to the honorable-mention all-conference team on Monday night, May 14 at the MVC office in St. Louis, Missouri.
Schooley hit .417 in MVC play which was second in the conference. He also led SIU with 45 hits, 30 RBI, 72 total bases, seven home runs, a .667 slugging percentage and .454 on base percentage against MVC opponents. He was also won the Missouri Valley Conference's Player of the Week Award on March 26 after he hit .588 (10-for-17) in five games the week of March 19-25.
In addition, Schooley led the Salukis in batting average (.346), total bases (94), slugging percentage (.516), RBI?s (35) and home runs (7). He had a season and career high 18 game hitting streak to his credit and led SIU with eight multiple RBI games, was second with 16 multiple hit games, was third on the team with six steals and didn?t make an error in the field this season.
Schooley also won the Richard "Itch" Jones award as the Salukis 2001 MVP. A native of Bloomfield, Iowa, he transferred from Kirkwood Community College and has been SIU's top hitter the last two years finishing his career with a .344 (111-for-322) batting average.
Maurath, a native of St. Louis and former Vianey High School star, batted .320 in MVC play with six doubles, three triples, three home runs, 25 RBIs and had a .536 slugging percentage. The Mesa (AZ) Community College transfer was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on April 9 after he hit .523 (11-for-21) with seven extra base hits in five games the week of April 2-8.
Overall Maurath was second at SIU with a .316 average, three home runs, 30-RBIs and a .493 slugging percentage. He led the Salukis with three triples and racked up his stats in just 43 of SIU's 55 games.
The Salukis finished the 2001 season at 19-36 overall and 10-21 (eighth place) in the Missouri Valley Conference.
