Southern Illinois University committed five errors which led to a pair of unearned runs enabling Bradley (13-21, 8-12) to post a 2-0 win Sunday in Missouri Valley Conference softball action at IAW Fields.
Despite the loss, SIU won the series 2-1 as the Salukis now stand at 34-15 overall and 17-7 in league play.
With one out in the top of the first, Bradley's Gina Calderone reached on a fielding error by SIU pitcher Erin Stremsterfer. Following back-to-back singles by Amy Fouts and Jackie Starkey, Calderone then went to third and would score on the same play when a wild throw from centerfielder Marta Viefhaus hit the backstop to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Calderone reached again in the top of the third, this time on a bunt single before another Fouts single advanced her to second. Calderone and Fouts then put on a double steal, but SIU catcher Karrie Fortman threw wild in attempt to peg Calderone at third allowing Bradley to take a 2-0 lead which would stand for the rest of the game.
Southern Illinois was two-hit by BU hurler Cristin Evans who moved to an even 10-10 with the win. Stremsterfer suffered the loss for the Salukis falling to 26-7 on the year. She struck out seven batters in seven innings pitched. Stremsterfer also doubled to makeup one of SIU's quiet two hits. Hallahan had the other as her single increased her hitting streak to five games. In addition, the Salukis honored six seniors - Hallahan, Stremsterfer, Marta Viefhaus, Julie Meier, Amanda Rexroat, Chiara Calvetti - who played in their final home game at SIU.
SIU will close out its regular season this week when the Salukis head to Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Wednesday, May 2 to take on Mississippi at 5 p.m. Following their non-league matchup with the Rebels, the Salukis will then travel to Omaha, Neb., to close out their MVC schedule with Creighton University May 4-5.
