All six Southern Illinois University nominees were named to the first-team 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete squad, announced Tuesday by the league office.
The team, which includes 15 first-teamers and an additional 10 honorable mention honorees, was voted on by league sports information directors.
Five repeat first-team selections highlighted this year's unit as a total of 35 student-athletes met the criteria for the team. Repeat first-team selections included Southwest Missouri State's Jessica Gorham, Creighton's Shelli Mellegaard, and Southern Illinois' Netty Hallahan, Erin Stremsterfer and Marta Viefhaus.
Also joining those five on the first team are Bridget Broerman and Lissa Conn of Evansville, Jami Canada of Southwest Missouri State, Lisa Clary and Patti Oleson of Wichita State, Jenny Guenther, Katie Kloess and Julie Meier of Southern Illinois, April Schermann and Abbi Scott of Illinois State.
The criteria for the Valley Scholar-Athlete Team parallels the Verizon/CoSIDA (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic all-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions. The top 15 vote-getters (plus ties) received first-team honors. A minimum of two votes was required for honorable-mention selection.
