Women's Basketball Loses Sixth Straight

Springfield, Mo. - Jennifer Lingor scored 13 points to lead six players in double figures as Southwest Missouri State (6-7, 3-2) posted a 86-48 win over Southern Illinois (4-9, 0-4) earlier this afternoon in front of 7,240 fans at John Q Hammons Student Center.
The SMS win marked its 10th straight over SIU as the Lady Bears lead the overall series 24-22.
SMS jumped all over SIU from the opening tip building a 20-9 lead with 12:01 remaining in the first half. Senior Ann Cavey scored two baskets in the first 47 seconds of the game to spark an 8-0 run which held the Salukis scoreless for 2:15.
The Lady Bears would then go on a 6-0 jaunt thanks to jumpers by Stephanie Busbey, Charlotte Nelson and Erica Vicente to help cap off SMS' early stampede.
Trailing 20-9, a Jodi Heiden basket at the 11:11 mark pulled the Salukis to within nine, 22-13, but SMS answered with a 22-10 run to build its biggest lead of the half at 44-23 with 1:49 to go. Carolyn Weirick scored six points, while Cavey added four to ignite the route.
A Kinga Kiss foul shot and a jumper by Hillary Phillips in the last 33 seconds then brought the opening frame to a 45-25 close in favor of the Lady Bears.
SMS shot a sizzling 62 percent (18-of-29) from the field in the first half led by Weirick's 10 points. SIU, on the other hand, hit 11-of-32 field goals for 34 percent, while being out-rebounded 28-11.
The Lady Bears continued to attack in the second half outscoring the Salukis 41-23 for the final 20 minutes. Ahead 59-37 with 10:59 to play, SMS strung together a knockout 25-9 blow which built its biggest lead of the game at 84-46 with 1:47 remaining. Both teams would then exchange baskets one more time as SMS iced the 86-48 win.
For the game, Lingor shot 6-of-10 from the field to lead all Lady Bear scorers. Morgan Hohenberger then followed with 11, while Nelson, Weirick, Cavey and Vicente each added 10.
Molly McDowell led SIU with 12 points followed by Geshla Woodard who pitched in 10.
SIU will return to action Monday, Jan. 14 when the Salukis head to Wichita, Kan., to take on Wichita State at 7 p.m.
Notes: SIU has now lost six straight games and seven of its last nine, The Salukis were out-rebounded by the Lady Bears 28-11 in the first half which included a 10-6 mark on the offensive glass, Southern Illinois is 0-4 in league play and hasn't won a game since Dec. 8, SIU is 9-15 at John Q. Hammons Student Center where the Salukis have lost 15 of their last 16 games against SMS, SIU shot a season-low 24 percent (16-of-66 from the field, including 5-of-34 (.147) in the second half, The Saluki loss marked the third straight game SIU has dropped by 33 or more points, SMS held a 54-34 advantage on the boards.
