Carbondale, Ill. - Currently on an eight-game losing streak, Southern Illinois (4-11, 0-6) will close out its brief two-game homestand Sunday afternoon when the Salukis host Illinois State (3-12, 1-5) at 2:05 p.m.
Southern Illinois and Illinois State have battled to a 38-37 mark in its overall series which stands in favor of the Salukis. The Dawgs posted a two-game sweep over the Redbirds last season and have won their last six of seven games over ISU.
SIU is still searching for its first league win of the 2001-02 campaign as the Salukis rank last in the Valley. Coming off a heartbreaking 71-65 loss to Indiana State on Thursday, the Dawgs are led by junior Molly McDowell who is averaging 13.4 points per game. McDowell scored 13 points against the Sycamores to post her 13th game scoring in double figures this season.
Following McDowell is Holly Teague who saw her average drop to 12.9 points per game after a nine-point performance against Indiana State. Despite her quiet nine points, Teague was solid on the boards, however, where she pulled down 10 rebounds. Geshla Woodard then rounds out the Dawgs' top three scoring 9.8 points to go along with 6.8 rebounds.
Like SIU, ninth-place Illinois State has had its share of losses this season. Losing five of their last six games, ISU is led by sophomore guard Taren O'Brien (9.3 ppg) as the Redbirds do not have one player scoring in double figures this season. O'Brien is followed by Kristi Larson who is averaging 8.3 points per game and Stacey White who is netting 7.9.
Those attending the SIU men's basketball game against Indiana State on Jan. 19 (7:05 p.m.), can use ticket stubs from that contest for admission into tomorrow's women's game.
