The Southern Illinois men's basketball team, eager to defend their MVC title and return to the NCAA Tournament, held its first practice of the season on Saturday at SIU Arena. The practice lasted 3 1/2 hours.
"This first part (of the season) is the fun part where you're developing your team," head coach Bruce Weber said afterward. "Old coaches will tell you that what you emphasize early and what you get good at early is what you'll be good at at the end."
Weber said the first practice was very competitive, with an emphasis on defense, motion offense, and the transition game.
The Salukis play their first exhibition game on Nov. 7, when they host Mexico Club.
