Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois (6-4) will make its home debut tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Southeast Missouri State (0-2) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at IAW Fields.
SIU, had a three-day break last week thanks to inclement weather which forced its annual Southern Classic to be cancelled.
The Salukis went 2-3 at the Florida Atlantic Invitational (Feb. 22-24), and as a result, stand at 6-4 on the young 2002 season. SIU, who batted .297 after its season-opening Mississippi State Bulldog Classic (Feb. 15-17), saw its average sink to .208 after the three-day event.
Freshmen Maria Damico (.296), Katie Jordan (.280) and Kelly Creek (.278) currently occupy the top three hitting spots as each are batting .278 or better. Damico, who has also doubled, tripled and homered this year, also leads the Salukis with five runs scored.
Alongside its offensive efforts, the Salukis' pitching game is also being controlled by a freshman. Nashville, Ill., native Amy Harre boasts a 0.22 ERA on the mound as the Dawgs' ace this season. Sporting a 2-2 record, Harre has struck out 26 batters in 32.0 innings pitched, while earning four saves.
