Tallahassee, Fla. - Haley Viefhaus went 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored, while Maria Damico went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Southern Illinois (11-6) to a 7-0 win over Iowa State tonight at the Seminole Invitational.
SIU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Tahira Saafir drew a one-out walk and stole second before scoring on a Maria Damico single.
Clinging to a one-run lead, the Salukis blew the game wide open in the top of the fourth which saw Cyclone pitcher Erica Martinez self-destruct. Each of SIU's first four hitters in the inning would score as the Dawgs batted around.
H. Viefhaus led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. After stealing third on the next play, Viefhaus scored on another wild pitch. Prior to Martinez's second wild pitch, which was one of six for the game, Karrie Fortman walked and advanced to third on the pair of fast balls that landed in the dirt.
With Fortman on third, Kelly Creek was called to pinch hit and delivered a clutch RBI-single. Creek then made it safely to second on another wild pitch before scoring on a single by Jami Weddle. Katie Kloess, who pinch ran for Weddle, immediately advanced to second on yet another wild pitch and touched home on a two-run error by shortstop Rainey Eanes. Eanes' throw sailed past first base and also allowed Saafir to score giving SIU a commanding 6-0 lead.
Still not finished, Kendra Moore hit a final RBI-single in the top of the seventh to seal the 7-0 shutout.
Amy Harre, who threw a perfect game through three innings, retired nine straight Iowa State batters before taking a line drive base hit in the lower stomach area from Julia Lindsey. Harre, however, recovered from Lindsey's rocket and calmly struck out two more batters before Renee Mueller entered in relief to polish off the win. For the game, Harre had four strikeouts as she improved to 5-3 on the year.
SIU will conclude play in the Seminole Invitational tomorrow when it takes on UMass at Noon. The Salukis defeated UMass, 5-3, earlier in the tournament.
