CARBONDALE, Ill. - Coming off season-best showings in their respective events at the Billy Hayes Invitational on Saturday, Southern Illinois University track and field athletes Jaanus Uudmae and Korto Dunbar each received their second Missouri Valley Conference "Athlete of the Week" honors on Wednesday.
Uudmae, a freshman from Tallinn, Estonia, was named "Field Athlete of the Week" for his first-place showing in the triple jump Saturday, a leap of 53 feet, 5 inches. That mark ranks third all-time on the SIU outdoor best list and is 3/4 an inch off the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Uudmae is now ranked first in the MVC in the event heading into this weekend's outdoor championship meet. Uudmae was second in the triple jump during the indoor season and placed 11th at the NCAA Championships.
Dunbar, a sophomore from Greenbelt, Md., placed fifth in a highly competitive 100-meter hurdle field on Saturday with a career-best time of 14.12 seconds. That time ranks the transfer from Seton Hall No. 1 in the MVC.
Dunbar won her first "Athlete of the Week" honor on April 16, while Uudmae was honored previously on January 29.
