Guenther and Kloess Named Scholar-Athlete All-MVC

Carbondale, Ill. - Six repeat first-team selections, including senior Jen Guenther and junior Katie Kloess highlighted the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference softball Scholar-Athlete Team, announced today by the league office.
This year's team consists of 12 first-teamers and an additional seven honorable-mention honorees, while a total of 40 student-athletes met the criteria for the team, voted on by league sports information directors.
Repeat first-team selections include Evansville's Bridget Broerman; SIU's Guenther and Kloess; Creighton's Shelli Mellegaard; Illinois State's Abbie Scott; and Drake's Jamie Waterman. Guenther carries a perfect 4.00 GPA in Business Management Information Systems, while Kloess holds a 3.84 GPA in Special Education.
The criteria for the Valley Scholar-Athlete Team parallels the Verizon/CoSIDA standards for academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions. The top 11 vote-getters (plus ties) received first-team honors. A minimum of two votes were required for honorable-mention selection.
