Wichita, Kan. - Senior first baseman Jen Guenther hit a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to lead Southern Illinois (30-14, 16-6) to a 2-0 win over Wichita State (19-33, 11-13) earlier tonight at Wilkins Stadium.
The win marked the Salukis' fifth straight and 11th in their last 13 games.
SIU left three runners on base in the first five innings of play despite being no-hit by Shocker hurler Lindsay Craig.
Craig, who retired nine straight SIU batters between the third and fifth innings, however, would self-destruct in the Saluki sixth.
Adie Viefhaus led off the frame with a walk. Kendra Moore, who pinch ran for A. Viefhaus moved to second on a SAC-bunt by Haley Viefhaus. Katie Jordan and Jami Weddle then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.
With one out and behind 0-2 in the count, Guenther stepped in and crushed Craig's third delivery deep down the right field line. Moore and Jordan scored on the play, and that was all it took for the Dawgs to seal the 2-0 shutout.
Craig, who fell to 13-20 on the season, gave up five walks for the game, including four in the sixth. She also struck out six batters, while being touched for just one hit.
Freshman Amy Harre (18-8) went the distance en route to her eighth straight win on the mound. The league's reigning Pitcher of the Week, Harre allowed just three hits, while striking out four.
SIU concludes its 2002 regular season tomorrow with a noon doubleheader against Wichita State.
