CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University has signed men's basketball coach Bruce Weber to a three-year contract extension with an automatic rollover, the school announced Wednesday.
His previous contract would have expired in June, 2003, and the extension keeps Weber under contract through the 2005-06 season. The rollover provision, in which one year is added to the length of the contract at the end of each year, takes effect July 1, 2004.
Weber has posted a 79-47 record in four seasons at SIU, including a 28-8 record last year as the team advanced to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in school history.
"I'm pleased that they've made a long term commitment," Weber said. "It helps show recruits and fans that there is stability in our program. The number one question recruits ask is 'how long are you going to be there?'"
The terms of the contract include a base salary of $245,388, which Weber said places him in the upper echelon of head coaches in the Missouri Valley Conference. There are also increased incentives for post-season play and additional incentives for the coaching staff if the team makes the NCAA Tournament.
"I think this contract shows a commitment by the University to maintaining a competitive basketball program," Athletic Director Paul Kowalczyk said. "We're very pleased with the job Bruce has done and recognize how hard he and his staff have worked to achieve success."
"We think Bruce Weber puts the University's best foot forward on and off the basketball court," said SIUC Chancellor Walter V. Wendler. "He will continue to be an asset for this institution and we expect the fans to roar when they hear this news."
