CARBONDALE, Ill. - Josh Markle went 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the White team to a 10-5 win over the Maroon squad earlier today in the final game of the Southern Illinois University baseball team's fall series at Abe Martin Field. With the win, the White Salukis took the three-game set, 2-1.
Sparked by Markle's hot bat, the White team registered 14 hits which outweighed the Maroon squad's 10.
The White team took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second. One-out singles by Markle and Nick Baughman, along with a double by Rush Olson ignited the rally.
Three more runs in the top of the third enabled the White Salukis to extend their lead to 7-0 when Markle delivered a two-RBI triple and scored.
Trailing 7-2 after four innings, the Maroon squad scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the deficit to 7-6. Erik Alvarez doubled and both Carl Heuer and Matt Brewer singled to lead off the attack. Walks by Grant Gerrard and Ben Hoffman also helped the threat.
Unfortunately for the Maroon, that was all the offense it could muster, as the White registered six of its 14 hits in the final two innings to preserve the 10-5 win.
Left-hander Bryan Rueger struck out three batters in two and two-thirds scoreless innings. Steve Quigley and Markle also had two strikeouts to pace the White hurlers.
Today's scrimmage was followed by a player/parent cookout, as the Salukis' fall practice officially ended.
