CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's squad came out strong in its first indoor meet of the 2003-04 season Friday. SIU grabbed thirteen top three finishes in the non-scored invitational, including four from the throwing well.
Senior Danielle Lawary was second in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 51-7, followed in third place by junior Venisha Williams who finished with a mark of 50-0 in the event. Sophomore Megan Cenkush finished in fourth place with a distance of 48-7.25.
Lawary would redeem herself in the shot put, taking the title with a throw of 46-11.75, while junior Katy Ritten grabbed second place with a toss of 44-0.75. Cenkush again finished in fourth place with a mark of 41-10.
Senior Korto Dunbar, a returning 2003 NCAA national qualifier, led the sprinters as she placed third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.19. Dunbar was followed by freshman Sherlinia Green in fourth place (7.27), junior Yvonne Cohen in fifth place (7.46) and freshman Leslie Murillo in fifth place (7.73).
Dunbar also grabbed runner-up honors in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.05, while Murillo finished fourth with a time of 8.48 in the event.
Freshman April Heath pulled out a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.93, while Green stole the show in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.58 to grab first place. Dunbar (25.73), Cohen (26.18) and freshman Marquita Vines (26.20) finished the 200-meter in second through fourth place for the Salukis.
In the jumping well, junior Inna Turevsky grabbed a third-place and second-place finish in the long jump and triple jump, respectively. Turevsky's posted marks of 18-1.25 in the long jump and 38-2.75 in the triple jump.
SIU will return to action on Jan. 16-17 at the SIU Student Rec. Center as it hosts the Saluki Booster Invitational. Complete results of the Fast Start Invitational and all upcoming events can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
