Shreveport, La. - P.J. Finigan scattered three hits, while Cory Newman, Sal Frisella and Greg Andrews each added two to lead Southern Illinois (1-1) to a split with Centenary College (3-4) tonight at Shehee Stadium.
SIU controlled game one from the get-go as Newman doubled to right center to lead off the top of the first inning. Following a Finigan strikeout, Frisella reached on a two-base error by catcher Justin Darr. Darr's miscue also put Newman on third. With runners on second and third and one out, Toby Barnett homered to right center to give the Dawgs a 3-0 lead.
The Salukis would strike again in the third when a Finigan single sparked a two-run rally. After A Frisella SAC-bunt moved Finigan to second, Barnett was hit by a pitch. Nathan Boldt then doubled to right center to drive home both Finigan and Barnett, giving SIU a 5-0 advantage.
Newman ignited another three-run rout in the top of the seventh with a single to left. With one out following a fielder's choice, Frisella was hit by a pitch and Barnett was intentionally walked to load the bases. A single by Andrews would score both Frisella and Finigan. An error by third baseman Joel Hoffman then allowed Barnett to come home to make it 8-0, in favor of the Dawgs.
Carl Heuer singled home Andrews in the top of the ninth to polish off the 9-2 win.
Jerel Deitering earned the win on the mound to move to 1-0 on the young season. In 6.0 innings, Deitering allowed five hits, while recording one strikeout.
In the nightcap, Centenary scored six runs in the third and seven in the seventh to fuel a 16-1 win.
The Gents held the Salukis to just five hits after allowing 10 in the first game.
SIU committed five errors in the game, including two in the third. Frisella went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI to lead all Salukis at the plate.
Eric Haberer suffered the loss on the hill after lasting three innings. During that span, Haberer allowed four hits and six runs. Ryan Welch, Andrew Weber and Colt Neumann also pitched in the game.
SIU will conclude its three-game series against Centenary tomorrow at noon.
