Tuscaloosa, Ala. - Junior Jenny Doehring homered and tripled and pitchers Amy Harre and Renee Mueller' combined shutout led Southern Illinois University to a 4-0 upset win over #22 Alabama (8-5) on Saturday at the Bama Bash.
"This was a huge win for our program, they're a great team and they'll be in a regional this year. To win in this atmosphere with all their fans (600) and the Alabama fight song playing was great for our kids to experience and accomplish," head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
"Jenny (Doehring) and Haley (Viefhaus) played great defense and their takeaways of hits by Alabama were as important as our offense today. The team played well and Doehring, (Katie) Jordan, (Katie) Louis and (Kelly) Creek hit the ball well. Jordan has hit two home runs to rightfield in this tournament."
Doehring started the scoring with her first home run, a solo shot that sailed over the scoreboard in left centerfield in the second inning. SIU added three runs in the seventh inning with one out. Katie Jordan hit a solo home run, her third of the year, to rightfield on a full count. Katie Louis followed with a single and Doehring tripled in Christina Andrews, pinch running for Louis. Kelly Creek added a single to score Doehring and the Salukis led 4-0 entering the final at bat for Alabama.
Harre (4-0) controlled the Crimson Tide though the first six innings, allowing just three hits. In the seventh, Harre struck out the leadoff hitter before Alabama loaded the bases with two hits and a walk, forcing Harre from the game. Mueller came in and forced a popout and a groundout to secure the win and pick up her first save of the year. Harre finished with five strikeouts and three walks to stay unbeaten in 2003.
"Harre did a great job getting us into the seventh inning and then Mueller finished it off for us. It was a gut feeling to put Mueller in to keep Alabama from getting back in the game and it worked out for us," added Blaylock.
Doehring was 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, two runs and two RBI to lead the Saluki attack. Jordan (1-for-3, HR, RBI) and Creek (1-for-3, RBI) were key in the seventh inning scoring spree.
The Salukis improved to 7-0 with the win and as the #1 seed faces #4 seed Winthrop (0-3) in the semifinal immediately. Live stats can be seen at www.rolltide.com of all SIU games.
