Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's track and field teams will take about 20 athletes to compete at the Friday Night Special hosted by Eastern Illinois University at Lantz Fieldhouse in Charleston. The scored meet begins with the men's 35lb. weight throw at 3 p.m. Running events will start at 4:15 p.m. with the men's 60m-hurdles.
Head men's coach Cameron Wright said this weekend is for fine-tuning, and there are some athletes whom he feels need one more chance to compete before the Missouri Valley Conference indoor championships next weekend at Illinois State.
"We need to assure that these guys will be in the fast heats at the conference meet," said Wright. "There are just a few things we need to tune-up before conference so we're taking a few athletes who may need one more meet [to compete] before next weekend."
The women's coaching staff agreed that one more meet before next weekend's conference show-down will benefit the athletes.
"This is the final tune-up for these athletes," said distance coach Matt Sparks. "This will help better ready them for the conference meet."
