Cedar Falls, Iowa - Lindsey Bonnell went 3-for-4 and the Viefhaus twins, Adie and Haley, each went 4-for-6 to lead Southern Illinois (31-7, 15-4 MVC) to a doubleheader sweep over Northern Iowa (23-17, 7-9 MVC) on Saturday.
"We played two really good games today and I'm really happy. They were a very good hitting team and for Amy (Harre) to throw a one-hitter and Renee (Mueller) to throw a four-hitter was great. We only gave them one run in two games and we came out with 13 hits in game one ourselves. We're getting production from the whole lineup which is important to me," SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
SIU scored in all five innings of game one, beginning with a single run in the first inning on two errors and no hits. The Salukis scored another run in the second inning on Samantha Carter's two-out RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Southern stretched the lead to 6-0 with four runs on five hits in the third inning. Jenny Doehring led off with a single and scored two batters later on Kelly Creek's double. Katie Jordan followed with a single to drive in pinch runner Katie Kloess. Jordan scored on the centerfielder's error on Maria Damico's deep fly ball and Damico scored on Adie Viefhaus' RBI single.
The Salukis added two runs in the fourth inning on four hits and an error. Bonnell singled to lead off the inning and after an error and sacrifice scored on Jordan's single. Damico singled to score Katie Louis and it was 8-0 SIU.
Southern added three runs in the fifth on two hits. Carter singled with an out, Bonnell reached on a fielder's choice and Jen Doehring hit a crushing shot to centerfield, her fifth of the year, to give SIU the final 8-0 margin and a season-high 13 hits. The home run by Doehring was the team's 37th of the year, tying the school record set in 1999. The four runs also forced Northern Iowa to score four runs to keep the game going past five innings.
The Panthers managed just break up Amy Harre's no-hitter with a single in the fifth, but couldn't manage any runs as Harre improve to 18-5 with the win. She struck out four and walked two in her best performance since a no-hitter against Bethune-Cookman on February 8.
SIU broke open a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when 11 Salukis batted and scored six runs on five hits and two errors in the bottom of the frame. Haley Viefhaus opened the inning with a double and scored three batters later when sister Adie Viefhaus singled. Doehring singled with the bases loaded to drive in Lauren Roney and Bonnell. Creek reached on an error with bases loaded and Tara Glasco, who pinch ran for Adie Viefhaus, scored. Damico beat out an infield single to drive in Doehring and Haley Viefhaus singled in Louis for her second hit of the inning and a 6-0 lead.
UNI scored a run in the sixth but Renee Mueller retired the next five batters of the game to complete a four-hitter. Mueller (11-2) struck out one and walked one to collect her career-high 11th win.
In addition to Bonnell and the Viefhaus twins, Doehring went 3-for-7 with five RBI, a home run and three runs scored.
SIU will travel to St. Louis to face the Billikens of St. Louis University in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday, April 24.
