Track and Field Heads To Drake Relays

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University track and field athletes will compete this weekend at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet features special invitational events, as well as athletes from universities and colleges from around the nation and Iowa high schools.
The meet officially begins Wednesday with the heptathlon starting at 11 a.m. and the decathlon to follow at 11:30 a.m. Those events will continue Thursday at 10 a.m. The women's 5K will kick off the distance carnival at 4:25 p.m. High school field events start at 5 p.m. Thursday. Action begins at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
A record 9,359 athletes, representing 781 teams, will participate in the 94th running of the Drake Relays. Now in its tenth decade, the 2002 Drake Relays had its 37th straight sellout of the Saturday program in the 18,000-seat Drake Stadium--the longest streak in U.S track and field history.
