Wednesday Press Conference
Below is a partial transcript of the Wednesday press conference by Paul Kowalczyk, Saluki director of athletics.
Partial Transcript
First of all, I want to thank everyone for attending. You know, a few years ago if we'd have had a press conference to recognize a change in the Saluki head men's basketball coaching position, the crowd would have been a lot smaller. At the time, we had a basketball team, now we have a basketball program.
"Bruce worked hard to build the program, and SIU's indebted to him for his service here. The fact that an institution with stature like U of I sought and hired our coach speaks well for the status of Saluki men's basketball. It's good for Bruce, and it's good for Southern Illinois University. I hate to see him move on, both personally and professionally. I truly enjoyed working with Bruce. He, Megan, and their family gave a lot to the department, to this university, and the region. We wish him nothing but the best, and we know he'll succeed.
And no, we do not have a lifetime home-and-home contract signed with Illinois.
Our attention, of course, if focused toward the future. As I look at the list of potential candidates, I'm confident we'll be able to hire someone that can build on our recent successes. Because we have a strong program, we can hire a talented coach, an individual with character who is concerned about the well being of our student athletes, both academically and athletically.
I realize the magnitude of this decision for this university, and for all of Southern Illinois University, and I expect to hire a coach who will continue to make everyone proud of our program.
I'll open up for questions..."
