Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois Head Coach Dan Callahan announced the signing of outfielder Kevin Koski. A native of Schaumburg, Ill., Koski will join the Salukis in the fall of 2003.
Koski, who also received interest from Northwestern, Illinois, Michigan State and Clemson, comes to SIU from Conant High School. Standing at 5-10, 170 lbs., the left-handed leadoff man hit .392 as a sophomore and .402 as a junior. As a senior, he hit .444 with seven doubles, 10 RBI and just two strikeouts in his first 45 at-bats of the season.
"We feel Kevin is truly one of the top outfielders in Illinois," said Callahan. "He might be the quickest outfielder we've signed since Joe Schley (Schley holds SIU's career record in hits). We also like the fact that he brings a left-handed bat to the lineup. Obviously, Kevin has to prove himself, but we feel he has the abilities to come in and play immediately."
Koski joins catcher Rush Olson (McLean, Ill.) who signed with the Salukis last November. In addition to Koski and Olson, Callahan hopes to sign another outfielder and a pitcher sometime soon. The possibility of signing a second pitcher and a middle infielder was also mentioned.
