Southern Illinois University men's basketball coach Matt Painter announced Friday that forward Blake Schoen intends to transfer to another school for the 2003-04 academic year.
Schoen averaged 1.8 points and less than 10 minutes per game as a true freshman in the 2002-03 campaign. The 6-foot-4 native of Oxford, Ind. did not practice with team on Friday as it prepares for a 10-day European trip that starts on Aug. 2.
"We certainly appreciate what Blake brought to the team last year and wish him well," Painter said. "In the short run, we're down to eight players for our European trip, but we will still be very talented at that position this season."
The Salukis return swingman Stetson Hairston, who has started every game the last two years, and have added junior college star Lamar Owen, as well. Competition for playing time this season will be fierce, Painter said. In addition, SIU hopes to add highly touted forward Mike Dale in the 2004-05 season. Dale will not play this season to focus on academics.
