CARBONDALE, Ill. - Former Southern Illinois University outfielder Sal Frisella was named to the Appalachian League post-season All-Star Team, released this week. Frisella is the only player from Johnson City on this year's squad. League managers and media voted for the awards.
Frisella has been a dominant force for the Redbirds' rookie affiliate in Tennessee ever since signing with St. Louis on the final day of the Major League Draft.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., he ranked in several offensive categories for Johnson City this season. In addition to leading his team in batting average (.338) and runs scored (32), he ranked second in doubles (10), home runs (7), walks (21) and RBI (30). He also led the Appy League in on-base percentage (.440), listed second in slugging percentage (.545) and ranked third in hitting.
Frisella's solid numbers earned him a promotion, as he recently moved up to the short-season A New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League.
