VANTAA, Finland - Twenty-four hours after touching down in Finland, the Southern Illinois University men's basketball team shook off the jet lag to defeat Finnish club team Pussihukat, 94-72, on Monday night.
Senior guard Bryan Turner, who averaged 3.5 ppg last season, led the Salukis with 24 points. Other players in double figures included Ryan Walker (17), Brad Korn (16), Darren Brooks (14) and Josh Warren (10).
"Without question, Bryan Turner played the best overall game he's played since he's been here," first-year head coach Matt Painter said. "He stepped up and made big shots and led the team in our play hard chart."
Turner was 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 8-of-12 overall from the field. He also added four rebounds.
Painter also praised the play of redshirt freshman guard Tony Young, who was in the starting lineup along with Korn, Turner, Warren and Sylvester Willis.
"Tony did a good job, even though he only scored four points," Painter said. "It was his first game in two years and he made some plays, pushed the ball well and picked up four steals."
The Salukis led at halftime 45-38 before pulling away in the second half.
"It was a good game to get our feet wet," Painter said. "Hopefully our opponents will get better."
The team returns to action tomorrow with a game in Porvoo, Finland.
