PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sports Network) - Southern Illinois University center Elmer McDaniel and safety Alexis Moreland were named to the Sports Network All-America football team Monday. Both players were seniors this past season and were All-Americans in 2003, as well.
McDaniel, a first-team selection, started all 12 games this season and 23 in a row for the Salukis. He led the team with 26 "bonus blocks" and had an overall effort grade of 98 percent. The Saluki offense ranked #1 in the conference and #2 in the nation in total offense and scoring offense. The Muskogee, Okla. native was named Gateway Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week against Western Kentucky on Oct. 16.
Moreland, a second-team pick, started all 12 games and made 43 career starts, the most on the team. He led the team with four interceptions and ranked fourth on the team in tackles. The Sarasota, Fla. native was also a dynamic special teams player with two blocked punts and one blocked PAT. The Saluki defense ranks #1 in the nation and the Gateway in scoring defense. Moreland earned All-American honors for the third year in a row.
Voting was conducted among I-AA sports information directors and selected media, with more than 100 ballots cast.
