CARBONDALE, Ill. - The ESPN Bracket Buster basketball game between Southern Illinois University and Hawaii, set for 11 p.m., Feb. 21, at the SIU Arena, is being billed as "Saluki Maroon Out." The SIU athletic department encourages everyone attending the game to wear Saluki maroon.
"Having a jam-packed arena, filled with all maroon-clad Saluki fans, would be quite a sight on national television," SIU Athletics Director Paul Kowalczyk said.
For those who don't have any maroon to wear to the game, some area businesses are pitching in to make sure the "Maroon Out" is a success.
Saluki Central, located on South Illinois Avenue and in the University Mall, has five dollar, maroon "House of Painter" tee shirts on sale. Saluki Central will also offer a 10 percent discount on anything Saluki maroon in their stores through Feb. 21.
710 Bookstore, located on South Illinois Avenue, and The Saluki Connection, located inside the Illinois Centre Mall in Marion, are offering five dollar "I Bleed Saluki Maroon" tee shirts or 10 dollar maroon Saluki basketball tee shirts beginning Feb. 16 and running through the 21st.
The University Bookstore, located in the SIU Student Center, is offering 20 percent off anything maroon Feb. 19 and 21st.
"We are extremely pleased that the local businesses are helping us promote our "Maroon Out," Kowalczyk said.
