OXFORD, Miss. - Southern Illinois (4-2) scored two runs in the second inning and held on to beat Illinois-Chicago 2-1 at the Rebel Invitational on Saturday.
SIU's Amy Harre threw a complete game, allowing five hits and five walks to pick up the win. Harre (2-0) struck out eight and allowed one run.
"I'm just really happy to get the win. We got in a couple tight spots late in the game and came through defensively and Amy Harre shut the door. I would have liked to swing the bats better, but we played defnse and pitched well," said SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock.
Haley Viefhaus walked to open the second inning. Lauren Roney singled, sending Viefhaus to third base. After a sacrifice by Lindsey Bonnell loaded the bases, Jenny Doehring reached on a fielder's choice and Haley Viefhaus scored on an error. Adie Viefhaus singled in Roney to drive in what would be the winning run.
Illinois-Chicago (0-7) scored one run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1. In the seventh, UIC managed to get runners on second and third with one out before Harre forced two ground outs to Doehring at shortstop to end the game.
Brittany McIntyre (0-2) allowed seven hits and three walks without an earned run. She struck out seven Salukis in the loss.
Roney went 2-for-2 with a walk, Adie Viefhaus went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Doehring and Bonnell each went 1-for-3 to lead the SIU offense.
