WICHITA, Kan. - Angela Buckner and Carlesa Dennis each posted double-doubles to lead Wichita State (8-15, 5-9) to a 70-57 win over Southern Illinois (3-19, 2-11) earlier tonight at Charles Koch Arena.
The win marked WSU's 11th in a row against SIU, as the Shockers became the third Valley opponent to sweep the Dawgs this season.
SIU led by a bucket on two occasions early in the game before WSU took control and never looked back.
Tied 10-10 with 11:18 remaining in the first half, the Shockers went on a 17-10 run to take a seven-point lead. Michelle Pettigrew scored seven points, including a pair of three-pointers to lead the surge, which gave WSU a 27-20 lead at the 3:48 mark.
WSU would then hold a 35-27 lead at the half.
After a Tiffany Crutcher layup cut WSU"s lead to four (48-44) with 12:18 left to play in the second half, WSU used a 10-2 run ignited by six more points from Pettigrew. Pettigrew knocked down a three-pointer to cap the rally which extended the Shockers' lead to 58-46 with less than eight minutes remaining.
The closest SIU would get following the run was seven points, as Dennis hit four straight free throws in the last 23 seconds to seal WSU's 70-57 win.
Buckner led all WSU scorers with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Dennis followed with 13 points and 17 boards. Aubrey Cameron also had 14 points, while Pettigrew chipped in 13. Pettigrew, who shot a near-perfect 3-of-4 from three-point range, scored all of her points during a span of 29 minutes off the bench.
SIU was led by Dana Pinkston's 13 points. Katie Berwanger and Crutcher also scored double figures, as each had 10.
SIU was out-rebounded, 49-32, which included a 17-9 WSU advantage on the offensive end. The Salukis also shot .387 (24-of-62) from the field to the Shockers .429 (27-of-63).
SIU returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21, when it plays at league-leading Southwest Missouri State. Tip off is at 7:05 p.m.
