NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore left-hander Ryan Mullins registered a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead Vanderbilt (3-0) to a 15-0 win over Southern Illinois (0-6) earlier today at Hawkins Field. With the win, the Commodores became the second straight team to post a series sweep over the Dawgs this season.
Prior to today, SIU hadn't been swept in back-to-back three-game series to open a season since 1997. At that time, the Salukis began the year at 0-6 after being swept at both Arizona State and Texas Tech.
After giving up a first-pitch lead off single to Nathan Emrick, Mullins whiffed 10 of SIU's next 15 batters, and recorded four straight Ks when he struck out the Saluki side in the third and fanned Emrick to start the fourth.
With Mullins retiring one Saluki hitter after another, the Commodore offense provided him with plenty of runs to help his shutout sparkle even more.
Starting with the bottom of the first, VU used three straight hits and three stolen bases to pull ahead of SIU early in the inning. Ryan Klosterman led things off with a single and quickly stole second. Antoan Richardson followed with a bunt single to move Klosterman over to third. After a Richardson stolen base, Warner Jones drove in both baserunners on a double to left. Jones would then score on an error by Nathan Boldt to give the Commodores a 3-0 lead.
After a solo home run by Jones in the bottom of the fifth, VU loaded the bases and scored three or four runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to run away with the 15-0 win.
Mullins (1-0) allowed just three hits and struck out 12 in his seven-inning shutout.
Ryan Davis suffered the loss on the hill for SIU. He gave up five hits and four runs, while issuing two walks and posting one strikeout in five innings. Jerel Deitering, Josh Joiner, Andrew Weber and Finigan also pitched for the Dawgs.
Offensively, the Commodores were led by Jones who went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, six RBI and two stolen bases. Additionally, Jones' pair of stolen bases added to VU's total of eight on the day.
Emrick, Nick Baughman, Finigan and Tyler Schooley each had one hit apiece to account for the Salukis' quiet four hits. SIU also had five errors in the game, as it's averaging three per game this season.
SIU plays at home for the first time this season when it hosts Northern Illinois in a three-game series on Feb. 27-29.
