CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois senior second baseman Greg Andrews was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, announced today by the league office.
A native of Peoria, Ill., the power-hitting Andrews became SIU's leading hitter after a stellar three-game performance last week.
Andrews, who has homered in four straight games, finished the week hitting .545 (6-for-11) with five runs scored, three home runs and eight RBI. One of his long balls was a grand slam against Murray State on Mar. 18. He also drew four walks and posted a 1.364 slugging percentage.
Most recently in SIU's two-game series against nationally-ranked Notre Dame (Mar. 20-21), Andrews led his team to its first win over a ranked opponent in two years by collecting two hits and one RBI in the Salukis' 8-4 victory. In those two games alone, he hit .750 with four runs, two homers and four RBI.
Additionally, Andrews hit his third home run of the week off Fighting Irish sophomore left-hander Tom Thornton, who was named the BIG EAST's Pitcher of the Week two times this year.
For Andrews, that home run added to a team-high and league-leading six round-trippers this season. It also marked the 21st of his career, as he tied Aaron Jones (1996-97) for ninth on the school's all-time career home run list.
The honor marks the second of Andrews' SIU career. He was last named the league's Player of the Week on May 5, 2003, marking the only Saluki to win the award that season.
