HONOLULU, Hawaii - Southern Illinois scored three runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-2 tie and beat host Hawaii (12-12) 6-2 on Saturday at the Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament. The Salukis (12-4) improved to 3-2 at the tournament.
"To me this was the best win we've had at the tournament and maybe the best win we've had all year because we faced adversity and came right back and overcame that. We may make mistakes, but I kept telling the team that somebody had to pick it and it happened," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach. "This was a very good win. We've got a lot of people going now and I hope it continues."
The Salukis jumped out to 1-0 lead in their at bat. Lindsey Bonnell walked with one out and stole second base. Two batters later, Katie Jordan singled with two outs to drive in Bonnell and give SIU a 1-0 lead.
Hawaii took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and an error. Noel Izumi singled and advanced to third when April Crowell reached on a throwing error by Haley Viefhaus. Pinch runner Tara Harbert stole second to leave runners on second and third base for clean-up hitter Tyleen Tausago, who doubled in both runs to give the Rainbow Wahine a 2-1 lead.
SIU tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Samantha Carter lead off with a single and advanced to second when Lauren Roney reached on an error while trying to lay down a sacrifice. Bonnell sacrificed to move the runners to second and third, before Jenny Doehring's sacrifice fly scored Carter from third to even the score.
The Salukis re-took the lead in the top of the sixth inning with three runs on two hits and an error. Haley Viefhaus led off with a single and scored on a three base throwing error by Hawaii's third baseman on Amanda Clifton's fielders's choice to take a 3-2 lead. Katie Louis followed with a two-run blast to deep centerfield that landed in the nearby tennis courts, giving SIU a 5-2 lead. The homerun was Louis' second of the year.
SIU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Doehring doubled to open the inning, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Jordan, and scored on a ground out by Haley Viefhaus to give the Salukis a 6-2 lead.
Harre (5-1) struck out four and allowed five hits and one earned run (two total) to pick up the win.
Hawaii's Melissa Coogan (4-8) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits, five runs and two walks, while striking out seven in 5.1 innings. Paula Blanning pitched 1.2 innings of relief, giving up SIU's final run and one hit.
