HONOLULU, Hawaii - Katie Louis hit a two-run homer and Amy Harre threw a three-hit shut out to lead SIU (13-6) to a 4-0 win over Hawaii on Tuesday. The Salukis split four games with the Rainbow Wahine (15-14) on the trip to Honolulu.
"I was really proud of the team. It's a tough play to play, we faced tough competition and there were other factors that played into the games here. We overcame some adversity and won," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
"Amy (Harre) came out and she battled. She was tired, but she gutted out a win with a great performance. I'm happy with this trip with the competition that was here. It was a good experience."
The Salukis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on the two-run home run to centerfield by Louis. Haley Viefhaus led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice by sister, Adie. After a ground out by Amanda Clifton, Louis crushed her third home run of the season for the two-run advantage.
SIU added two runs in the top of the fourth inning on one hit and a throwing error. Katie Jordan led off the inning with a single and Christina Andrews came on to pinch run for Jordan. Haley Viefhaus followed with a walk and Andrews advanced to third on a fly out to rightfield by Adie Viefhaus.
That's when things got interesting. Haley Viefhaus moved to third on a wild pitch, but Hawaii catcher Denise Dahlberg chased the ball down, keeping Andrews at third base. Dahlberg then threw the ball into the outfield trying to get Viefhaus, who was standing at second base already, allowing Andrews and Viefhaus to score, giving the Salukis a 4-0 lead.
Harre (6-1) threw her eighth complete game of the season, struck out three, walked three and allowed three hits and no runs.
Hawaii's Shannon Tabion (10-3) allowed two runs, two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in three innings to suffer the loss. HU's Elissa Coogan came on in relief and allowed two runs, three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in four innings.
Louis (1-for-3, HR, run, 2 RBI), Adie Viefhaus (1-for-2), Haley Viefhaus (1-for-2, 2 runs) and Lauren Roney (1-for-2) led the SIU offense.
Next up for the Salukis will be the first Saluki Round Robin on March 13-14 at West Stadium.
