Softball Slams St. Louis 8-0 In Six Innings

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Senior Jenny Doehring hit her first career grand slam and Amy Harre threw a one-hit shutout, leading SIU to an 8-0 six-inning win over St. Louis in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at West Stadium on Wednesday. The Salukis improved to 31-2 all-time against the Billikens.
SIU struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a walk and a stolen base by Lindsey Bonnell and an RBI single by Haley Viefhaus.
The Salukis added two runs in the second inning on four walks and two singles. With two outs and Maria Damico and Samantha Carter on first and second respectively, Doehring walked to loaded the bases. Bonnell was hit by Saint Louis starter Elizabeth Nielsen to push across Damico. Katie Jordan walked to drive in Carter for a 3-0 SIU advantage.
Doehring put the game away with her first grand slam of her career in the third inning. Adie Viefhaus was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Katie Louis followed with a walk, moving Viefhaus to second. St. Louis brought in third baseman Kerri Higgins for Nielsen. Higgins struck out Kelly Creek and Damico. Carter walked to load the bases with two out setting up Doehring, who crushed a 3-2 pitch to centerfield for her first homer of the season and a 7-0 lead.
After two scoreless innings, SIU ended the game in the sixth inning on the eight-run rule. Bonnell layed down a bunt single with one out and moved to second on a throwing error. Jordan singled to deep short, moving Bonnell to third. Haley Viefhaus grounded to second base and Bonnell beat the throw home to end the game with the eighth run.
Harre (11-3) allowed a single in the fourth inning and struck out a season-high nine batters with three walks.
SLU's Nielsen (13-17) allowed five runs, three hits and five walks in two innings with one strikeout in the loss. Higgins allowed three hits, three runs and two walks in 3.1 innings with four strikeouts in relief.
Doehring (1-for-3, HR, run, 4 RBI), Bonnell (1-for-1, RBI, 2 runs), Jordan (1-for-3, 1 RBI), Haley Viefhaus (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and Carter (1-for-2, 2 runs) led the SIU offense.
