WICHITA, Kan. - Mike Pelfrey registered a career-high 11 strikeouts and became the first Shocker pitcher to throw a complete game this season, as No. 11 Wichita State (21-6, 13-0) coasted to a 9-1 win over Southern Illinois (10-20-1, 5-7-1) earlier tonight at Eck Stadium.
Pelfrey held SIU to just five hits and threw eight scoreless innings en route to moving his record to 5-0 on the year.
After opening the game by giving up a lead off double to Kevin Koski, who was thrown out at third on the play, Pelfrey struck out three of SIU's next five batters.
Shortly after sitting down five straight Salukis, Nick Baughman ripped a lead off single to center to start the top of the third. A Erik Alvarez sacrifice bunt moved Baughman to second and a Cory Newman grounder to short advanced him to third. Koski then knocked in Baughman on a single to left to give SIU a 1-0 lead.
And unfortunately for the Dawgs, that was all the offense they'd muster against Pelfrey, who would retire 18 of SIU's last 21 batters of the game following Baughman's hit. He also fanned another seven Salukis during that stretch.
WSU's offense, on the other hand, was just getting started.
A two-out double by Logan Sorensen and back-to-back wild pitches from Saluki starter Eric Haberer helped the Shockers tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. WSU would then score a pair of runs on three hits in the fifth, where a two-RBI single by Sorensen scored both Nick Blasi and Shawn Smarsh to push the Shockers' lead to 3-1.
Two Saluki errors led to another WSU run in the sixth, before SIU pitching fell apart in a hefty Shocker seventh.
Haberer issued back-to-back walks to Sorensen and Drew Moffitt to begin the seventh. Moments after Haberer was relieved by Adam Snyder, Snyder walked Mark Johnson to load the bases. A two-RBI single by Brandon Green, a run-scoring double by Joe Muich and a sacrifice fly by Smarsh followed to give WSU a 8-1 advantage.
One more SIU error, a pinch-hit single by Derek Schermerhorn and a RBI-double by Nick McCoola in the eighth iced the 9-1 win for the Shockers..
Haberer (3-1) also struck out a career-high, as he fanned seven batters in six innings of work, but his outing would be overshadowed by four wild pitches. He also allowed eight hits and six runs to go along with three walks, before suffering his first loss of the season.
WSU, who out-hit SIU, 13-5, was led by Sorensen who went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Blasi and Green followed with two hits each.
Koski went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI to lead the Salukis. Nathan Boldt, Matt Brewer and Baughman accounted for the other three hits.
SIU and WSU resume their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Right-hander Marshall Tucker will start the seven-inning game and right-hander Josh Joiner will get the start in the nightcap.
