WICHITA, Kan. - Brandon Green went 6-for-8 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI to lead No. 11 Wichita State (23-6, 15-0) to a 15-2, 5-1, doubleheader sweep of Southern Illinois (10-22-1, 5-9-1) earlier today at Eck Stadium.
The two wins added to a total of 1,429 wins for 27-year Shocker head coach Gene Stephenson, who moved into second on the all-time wins list for Division I baseball. Stephenson surpassed former University of Texas head coach Cliff Gustafson who compiled 1,427 wins in 29 seasons.
WSU jumped all over SIU starter Marshall Tucker in the bottom of the first, where three hits, including a two-RBI single by Mark Johnson gave the Shockers an early 2-0 lead.
Three errors and a hit batsman helped WSU score four unearned runs to up its lead to 6-0 in the second. Joe Muich scored on an error by Erik Alvarez and Nick Blasi touched home on an error by P.J. Finigan. Shawn Smarsh and Derek Schermerhorn scored the Shockers' other two runs, but not before Alvarez's miscue and an error by Nathan Boldt enabled them to get into scoring position. For SIU, the inning marked the third in its last six games, where an opponent scored at least four runs on just one hit.
SIU cut into WSU's lead in the third when a lead off single by Kevin Koski, a double by Finigan and a two-RBI single by Nathan Emrick brought the Dawgs to within four runs (6-2).
But the Shockers answered during their turn in the third, where they scored seven runs on seven hits to blow the game wide open.
Logan Sorensen hit a two-RBI double, while Drew Moffitt, Brandon Green, Schermerhorn and Blasi each had run-scoring singles. A sacrifice fly by Muich also added to the attack, as WSU batted around before pulling ahead, 13-2.
Solo home runs by Moffitt and Green then sealed the 15-2 win for WSU. Moffitt hit a two-out homer in the fifth and Green's smash came in a lead off at-bat in the sixth.
Steve Uhlmansiek gave up just six hits and two runs in six innings to improve to 6-0 on the year. He also struck out five and walked two.
Tucker, who hadn't allowed an earned run in four previous appearances against WSU, allowed eight hits and 12 runs, including eight earned in only 2.2 innings. In addition, he posted a pair of strikeouts and issued three walks.
WSU pounded out 14 hits in the seven-inning contest. Green paved the way by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Blasi, Sorensen, Moffitt and Johnson followed with two hits apiece.
Koski went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead SIU. Four others, including Finigan, Emrick, Nick Baughman and Grant Gerrard also hit safely for the Dawgs.
In the nightcap, right-hander Jereme Foster and left-hander Derek Roach teamed up to hold SIU to just five hits.
Foster no-hit the Salukis for the first four innings of the game, before a fifth-inning Grant Gerrard double wrecked the bid. Foster also registered three strikeouts and issued three walks, before Roach took over.
With Foster setting the tone on the mound, WSU's offense picked up where it left off, and as a result, took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Blasi and Phil Napolitan sparked the rally with back-to-back singles. Napolitan's hit, which scored Blasi from second after a wild pitch, was followed up with a two-out, RBI-single by Green.
A lead off double by Sorensen helped the Shockers plate another two runs in the third. Sorensen, who stole third, scored on a throwing error by SIU catcher Brendan Lutz. Drew Moffitt then walked and later scored on a double by Green to give WSU a 4-0 lead.
Muich posted WSU's fourth double of the game to set up one more run for the Shockers in the sixth. An ensuing single by Nick McCoola knocked in Muich to build WSU's lead to 5-0.
SIU avoided the shutout in the eighth, where Greg Andrews singled home Koski. Andrews' hit was one of three in the inning, as the Salukis left two runners on base.
With the win, Foster improved to 2-1 on the year. Roach, who started his four-inning stretch by retiring six straight Salukis, gave up four hits and one run, while fanning four.
Josh Joiner (0-2) suffered the loss for SIU. Joiner scattered nine hits in seven innings. He also struck out four batters and issued three walks.
Offensively, Green went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead WSU.
Finigan, Andrews, Boldt, Gerrard and Cory Newman each had one hit for SIU.
SIU and WSU conlude their series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
