SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Freshman Cassidy Scoggins threw a complete game, three-hit shutout and Haley Viefhaus drove in three runs to lead Southern Illinois (27-6, 7-0 MVC) to a doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 victory over SMS (18-18, 4-6 MVC) at the SMS Softball Field. The win, SIU's fifteenth straight, improves the first place Salukis to 7-0 in the Valley. SIU won the early game 3-2.
"The first win set the tone for the second game. It's the first time in my 14 years as a head or assistant coach that we won two games in one day at SMS. This is huge for us, since its such a tough place to play," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
"Cassidy (Scoggins) did a great job, but I'm really impressed with the way we hit the ball today. We had a big two-out hit by Haley Viefhaus to drive in two runs, which allowed Cassidy to settle down and she went to work and threw a good game. I'm proud of the kids for coming back and playing at a high level," added Blaylock.
Scoggins (8-2) dominated SMS, allowing just one runner to reach second base. She struck out four and walked two to earn her fourth shutout, eighth complete game and her eighth win of the year.
The Salukis gave Scoggins all she needed in the first inning, scoring two runs. Lindsey Bonnell walked with one out and Katie Jordan doubled with two outs to set up Haley Viefhaus. Viefhaus singled leftfield to drive in Bonnell with the winning run and Jordan scored on an error by the leftfielder handling the ball for a 2-0 lead after one inning.
SIU added two more runs in the third inning on a Haley Viefhaus double. Once again Bonnell walked with one out. Jenny Doehring sacrificed Bonnell to second and Jordan walked. Viefhaus doubled to rightfield scoring Bonnell and Jordan for a 4-0 lead. Viefhaus tied a career-high with three RBI.
"The sweep was huge and we want to get one more tomorrow. We're playing at a high level and I'm glad we keep winning. I thought countering their offense was the key today," Blaylock stated.
SMS's Lindsey Major (8-7) allowed all four SIU runs, three hits and four walks in the loss. Major struck out four Salukis.
Viefhaus (2-for-2, double, 3 RBI), Bonnell (2 runs) and Jordan (1-for-2, double, 2 runs) led the SIU attack.
