CARBONDALE, Ill. - Nathan Boldt went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI and Matt Brewer and Nick Baughman each went 2-for-3 to lead Southern Illinois (8-17-1, 4-4-1) to a 7-3 win over Evansville (14-15, 2-7) earlier today at Abe Martin Field.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for SIU.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, SIU scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
The Salukis capitalized on five walks issued by UE right-hander Adam Rogers to fuel their rally in the second. Greg Andrews led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on a single by Boldt. Brewer and Erik Alvarez then drew back-to-back walks and Andrews scored.
Moments later, Baughman delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Boldt, before Kevin Koski and P.J. Finigan would also reach on walks. Finigan's bases on balls, however, enabled Brewer to score.
Although the Purple Aces would tie the game at 3-3 on a RBI-single by Erik Lis in the top of the fifth, SIU answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to put UE away.
Koski reached on an error by first baseman Lis and advanced to second on a single by Finigan. An ensuing Nathan Emrick single would load the bases for Andrews, who hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Koski. Boldt followed Andrews' sac fly up with a two-RBI single and Brewer delivered a RBI-hit to cap off the 7-3 win.
Left-hander Eric Haberer improved his record to 3-0 on the year after allowing seven hits and three runs in five innings. Haberer also struck out two and walked six. Additionally, his streak of 14 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run came to an end today.
Adam Snyder pitched the last four innings of the game en route to his first save of the season. Snyder did not allow a hit or a run, and struck out two batters during that span to preserve the win.
Rogers (2-3) took the fall on the mound for UE. He was touched for seven hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings. He also walked five.
Offensively, SIU out-hit UE, 9-7, as Boldt paved the way with his three hits.
Defensively, the Dawgs went their fourth consecutive game without committing an error.
SIU and UE resume their four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at noon.
