CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois (30-7, 10-1 MVC) scored an unearned run in the eighth inning with two outs on a single, a walk and an error, to overcome a 1-0 deficit and beat Illinois State 2-1 in eight innings. The win extended SIU's home winning streak to 14 games at Charlotte West Stadium.
Illinois State scored in the top of the third inning on a single, a sacrifice, a groundout and an RBI single by Dominique Borba for a 1-0 lead, which the Redbirds held for a half inning.
SIU responded by tying the game in the bottom of the third. Adie Viefhaus led off with a single and pinch runner Christina Andrews came on to run for Viefhaus. Andrews moved to second on a sacrifice by Kelly Creek and then scored on the RBI single down the leftfield line by Samantha Carter to even the score at 1-1.
Saluki starter Amy Harre allowed a season-high 10 hits through seven innings, allowing a hit in each inning but the seventh, when she allowed a walk. Harre stranded nine Redbird hitters, leaving at least one on base every inning but the fourth. She allowed a single to open the eighth and Cassidy Scoggins came on in relief. Scoggins (9-2) retired the next three batters to keep SIU in position for the win.
After retiring the first two runners in the eighth inning, ISU's Stacy Birk (10-4) gave up a single to Jenny Doehring and walked Katie Jordan. Haley Viefhaus hit a deep fly ball in the gap between center and rightfield, where Lauren Bierwirth hustled over to make the play and dropped the ball, allowing Doehring to score the winning run.
SIU's Scoggins collected the win with one innings of hitless, scoreless pitching. Harre ISU's Birk allowed two runs, two walks and four hits with three strikeouts to suffer the loss on the unearned run.
Carter (1-for-2, RBI), Doehring (1-for-2, run), Adie Viefhaus (1-for-3) and Lindsey Bonnell (1-for-3) collected SIU's four hits.
