Baughman Named Academic All-District V

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University senior outfielder Nick Baughman was named to the 2004 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District V team, and is now eligible for the organization's Academic All-American squad.
A native of Bloomington, Ill., Baughman carries a 3.79 GPA in Elementary Education and was one of 11 student-athletes selected to this year's team.
A team captain, Baughman was named second-team all-MVC Scholar-Athlete in 2003 and represented SIU at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in 2002. Statistically, he is hitting .261 with 15 runs scored, 30 hits, three doubles, one home run and 11 RBI. His only home run was a first-pitch, walk-off smash in the bottom of the ninth against Evansville on Apr. 11.
In addition to Baughman, four others from the Missouri Valley Conference were selected to this year's District V team, including Bradley's Brian Spielman (P), Brad Canada (C) and Brian Meischner (INF), and Illinois State's Nate Whitney (OF).
This year marks the second straight that Saluki Baseball has placed at least one student-athlete on the Academic All-District V team. Former Saluki Ross Kowzan also garnered the honor in 2003.
