CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Women's Golf team finished second at the Austin Peay Invitational. The team shot a total of 316-322=638 to take the runner-up place in the 17-team tournament held at The Clarksville Country Club (par 72, 5,990 yards) in Clarksville, Tenn.
Sophomore Christine Zoerlein lead the Salukis as she finished second overall 76-77=153. This is Zoerlein's best finish of the season, who went into the tournament with a 79.9 season stroke average. She was one of the only Salukis to shoot a consistent two rounds. Winning the individual tournament was Audra Williams of Belmont with a total of 74-77=151.
"The greens were tough and the conditions were treacherous, but I think it was a good learning experience," Coach Diane Daugherty said. "This was the first time, in a while, that we have been in the lead of a tournament, and we need to learn how to handle that."
The Salukis went into the final round of the tournament with a five shot lead over Butler University, but a rough day on the greens saw that lead slide and then some, leaving the Salukis seven strokes behind the first place finishers.
"It's still a great way to end the fall season," Daugherty said. "The conditions were the same today as yesterday, and we did not handle them as well."
Even though the team did not shoot as well in the final round of the tournament, the Salukis still had three top 20 finishers. Braidy Hood was the only Saluki to improve on her score from the first round shooting a two day total of 82-80=162. Hood finished the tournament in 14th place.
Lowder, who shot a 76 yesterday and was tied for second place, shot an 82 and fell to seventh place by the end of the second day.
Samantha Sutzer also struggled in the final round shooting an 85, giving her a tournament total of 82-85=167.
Natalie Parker finished well over her 78.3 stroke average shooting 84-83=167.
"There were 17 teams at the tournament and we beat 15 of them," said Daugherty. "That is a positive way to finish out our fall season."
