CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's and women's track and field teams travel to Ames, Iowa, Friday and Saturday Feb. 11-12, to take on the field at the Iowa State Classic.
Both Saluki squads are coming off of team victories at the McDonald's Invitational Feb. 5, where they combined to win six events. The coaching staff is looking for more improvement from their teams running on Iowa State's Lied Center 300-meter track, a change from the regular 200-meter track.
"It's going to be a benefit to go run on a 300-meter track," Saluki head coach Connie Price-Smith said. "It has wider curves and turns and longer straight-aways so it's good for our runners to actually run on an oversized track."
SIU will be competing against competition from larger schools in the Big 12, Big 10 and the SEC, many schools they have not competed against this season including Illinois, host Iowa State and Florida.
"This is going to be a meet where the competition is going to be a little tougher," Price-Smith said. "It will make them have to perform better to make finals.
"We're really looking for more improved times and hopefully we'll get a couple of provisional qualifiers and maybe even some automatic qualifiers out of the competition."
The meet will begin Friday at 3 p.m. and will resume Saturday at 9:45 a.m. Results from the meet can be found at www.siusalukis.com following each day of competition.
