COLUMBUS, Ga. - #8 Michigan's Lorilyn Wilson held Southern Illinois (4-6) to three hits in a 3-0 shutout over the Salukis on Saturday in pool play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at South Commons Complex.
Michigan (11-1) won the pool with a 3-0 record and scored their three runs in just five hits against SIU's Amy Harre.
"The way they played today, Michigan is the best team we've played so far. I know California is #1, but Michigan is as good as I've seen. The hit the ball up and down the lineup and their pitcher threw a great game against us. We're banged up right now, but we still had some chances and they just beat us today," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
The Wolverines scored a run in fourth inning on an RBI single by Nicole Montycka, driving in Jessica Merchant, who was hit by Harre and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Michigan's two singles in the inning ended a perfect game by Harre.
"Amy's pitching well, but has been a victim of circumstance," added Blaylock. "She's been snake bit. If she can just hang in there she'll have a lot of wins by the end of the season."
Michigan added two runs in the sixth inning when Samantha Findlay golfed a Harre pitch over the leftfield fence for a two-run home run and the final 3-0 margin.
UM's Wilson (4-0) struck out nine Salukis, walked no one and allowed three hits in the shutout.
SIU's Harre (1-5) struck out four, walked no one and allowed five hits and three earned runs.
The Salukis will open bracket play in the Silver Bracket against Cal-State Northridge at 6 p.m.
