CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois (8-6) pounded out 14 hits, as four Salukis, including Matt Brewer, Grant Gerrard, Erik Alvarez and Brendan Lutz each had two in a 13-7 win over Chicago State (0-15) earlier today at Abe Martin Field.
Prior to today, SIU had under 10 hits in five of its last six games.
The Salukis took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second, as a costly CSU error plated four unearned runs.
With two away after Nathan Emrick and Dean Cademartori lined out, consecutively, Alvarez hit his first home run of the season. Moments after Alvarez's solo shot to left, Lutz tripled and scored when Tyler Lairson reached on a throwing error by Cougar second baseman Jonathan Sakurai.
Lairson, who went to second on a passed ball, scored when Koski singled to left. Koski then stole second and P.J. Finigan walked. Brewer followed with a double to plate both Koski and Finigan.
SIU led by as many as seven runs (10-3) after six, but CSU started to make things interesting late in the game.
After scoring one run in the seventh, the Cougars narrowed the gap to 10-7 with a three-run eighth.
Against freshman Ryan Terry, who relieved Saluki starter Jason Chavez in the sixth, CSU loaded the bases with one out.
After John Torres' double knocked in Brian Grippo and advanced Alex Hall to third, Raven Jackson walked to juice the bags. A wild pitch followed, and each runner moved up a base, with Hall touching home. Andy Pasko reached on an ensuing error by third baseman Chris McCulloch, and Torres scored.
Saluki reliever Mark Obszanski suddenly halted the Cougars' rally when he got Elliott Reyes out on a 1-4-5-3 double play.
Aided by another CSU error, SIU answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the eighth.
McCulloch reached on an error by shortstop Hall and stole second. Brewer followed with a walk, before Gerrard's third double of the year scored both McCulloch and Brewer. Cademartori's single up the middle drove in Gerrard to seal the 13-7 win.
Chavez evened his record to 2-2 on the year after striking out three in five innings.
Obszanski, who struck out the side in the Cougar ninth, earned his first career save at SIU. His three strikeouts came over a span of 1.2 scoreless innings.
Kyle Kupiec fell to 0-3 after scattering nine hits, allowing nine runs and issuing three walks. He also struck out three.
SIU registered five extra-base hits on the day, including a pair of doubles by Gerrard, a double by Brewer, a triple by Lutz and a homer by Alvarez.
Brewer also finished with a game-high three RBI, while Gerrard followed with two. Brewer and Gerrard lead the Dawgs in RBI with 20 and 19, respectively.
Reyes and Hall each had two hits to lead CSU.
Defensively, both teams were shaky, as each committed five errors on the afternoon.
Additionally, there were a total of 19 runners left on base between the two teams, as CSU stranded 11 and SIU stranded eight.
SIU and CSU resume their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m., as Finigan (1-1) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Dawgs.
