CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University junior Matt Brewer was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, while Saluki teammate P.J. Finigan garnered Pitcher of the Week honors, announced today by the league office.
Both natives of Springfield, Ill., Brewer and Finigan helped lead SIU to a three-game sweep of Northern Iowa last weekend.
Brewer hit .462 (6-for-13) with two home runs and a pair of doubles. He had a hand in 15 of SIU's 33 runs scored against the Panthers, with his nine runs and six RBI. In addition, he stole a base and boasted a 1.077 slugging percentage.
In SIU's 18-2 win over the Panthers on Mar. 26, Brewer's four-RBI performance led the Dawgs, whose 33 runs against UNI marked the most by a Saluki club since 1999.
Meanwhile, Finigan (3-1), pitched seven innings and allowed an earned run and one walk, while striking out 10 Panthers en route to his third win of the season on Mar. 26.
He also allowed three hits, and struck out four of UNI's first seven hitters of the game, as he recorded double-digit strikeouts for the second time in his last three starts.
The MVC Pitcher of the Week honor marks Finigan's second of the season, while Brewer's Player of the Week award is his first.
