ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Following one of the best weeks in SIU's or any other school's history as a pitcher, Cassidy Scoggins truly earned her first Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week award on Monday, as announced by the MVC Office.
"It's nice for Cassidy to win this award. She deserves this after the performances she had last week. I'm happy for her," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
Sophomore Cassidy Scoggins, a native of Owasso, Okla., enjoyed possibly the best week in SIU history for a pitcher. Scoggins went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, two no-hitters, a one-hitter, three shutouts, three complete games, 29 strikeouts, and one hit and two walks allowed in 23 innings. She allowed just a .014 opponents average in three starts, 70 at bats and four total appearances.
Scoggins threw back-to-back no-hitters for the first time in school history and faced just 67 batters, four over the minimum in her three starts. She won her fourth straight decision to improve to 17-3 overall, with a 0.58 ERA (1st in the MVC), which likely will rank her in the top ten in the nation when the NCAA releases its statistics this week.
Scoggins opened the week on the road Thursday, April 14, with a one-hitter in a 2-0 win over Evansville. She struck out 11 batters, including the side in the first inning, and five of the first eight, before allowing a hit. Scoggins hit a batter and allowed a walk to provide the only other two runners to reach base, none of whom advanced to second base in the game. She faced just 24 batters in the contest.
On Saturday, April 16, Scoggins threw her second career and first seven-inning no-hitter in a 7-0 win over SW Missouri State (SMS). She struck out six and her walk to open the second inning was her only blemish of the game. The batter was thrown out stealing second and she retired the remaining 17 batters to finish with the minimum 21 hitters faced, and just a walk away from a perfect game.
On Sunday, Scoggins threw another no-hitter against SMS in a 3-0 win, striking out nine without a walk, and allowing only the leadoff hitter to reach on an error. She retired the next 21 batters, including striking out six straight, to face just 22 batters in the game.
In SIU's 8-1 win over Evansville, following her no-hitter, Scoggins threw two innings of relief, facing the minimum six batters, and striking out three. For the week, she didn't have a wild pitch or balk, and didn't allow a sacrifice or sacrifice fly.
In addition, Scoggins hit .286 (2-for-7) with two doubles, two RBI and drove in the game-winning run in SIU's 3-0 win during her second no-hitter of the week. For the season, Scoggins has 14 complete games in 15 starts, six shutouts, 150 strikeouts, 14 walks, 10 earned runs and 15 runs allowed, a save and an opponents average of .114 in 24 appearances over 121.2 innings. She has allowed just 11 extra base hits and 46 total hits in 404 at bats. Her 17th win is a career-best and she is the current SIU career leader in ERA (0.89) and winning percentage (.811, 30-7).
Scoggins is the fourth straight Saluki to win one of the MVC weekly awards and the seventh Saluki overall to earn one of the awards.
