Dawgs in Non-Conference Play
SIU is 15-9 overall and against non-conference opponents this season.
The Salukis will go after their fifth consecutive win in a midweek game after last beating Middle Tennessee State (10-8) on Mar. 16, Tennessee-Martin (4-3, 11 inn.) on Mar. 29, Murray State (6-2) on Apr. 6 and Eastern Illinois (9-0) on Apr. 12.
SIU stands at 4-3 in midweek games this season, as all but one of those matchups have been against OVC foes.
The Coaches
Dan Callahan (Quincy College, `81; SIU, `87) is 273-313-1, 140-178-1 (MVC) in his 11th season at the helm of the Saluki Baseball program. Callahan guided the Dawgs to the MVC Tournament Championship game in each of the last two seasons. He is 423-470-2 all-time in 16-plus years as a Division I head coach.
Victor "Bubba" Cates is 94-249-1 in his seventh season as head coach at Tennessee-Martin. Cates came to UTM from Jackson State Community College where he built a successful program during a nine-year period.
Series History
SIU is 15-3 all-time against UTM. The Salukis are 9-3 against UTM under Callahan, and have beaten the Skyhawks in five of the last seven meetings.
Terry Nice
Freshman right-hander Ryan Terry (Palmyra, Mich.) is expected to make his fourth consecutive midweek start Tuesday against UTM.
Terry, who hails from Palmyra, Mich., emerged as the Salukis' midweek starter when he gave up one hit and struck out two in five scoreless innings of a no-decision against the Skyhawks on Mar. 29.
A week later, he scattered four hits, struck out two and gave up a pair of runs in five innings against Murray State (Apr. 6). He also held the Thoroughbreds scoreless for four innings en route to his first career win.
Most recently, Terry struck out six in seven shutout innings to lead SIU to a 9-0 blanking of Eastern Illinois a week ago.
On the year, he is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in six appearances, including three starts. He also recorded 13 strikeouts in 22 innings of work. In addition, he has held opponents scoreless in 16 of his last 17 innings.
Scouting the Skyhawks
UTM has lost 18 of its last 22 games, and enters Tuesday's game after dropping two of three at Tennessee Tech on Apr. 16-17.
Offensively, the Skyhawks are led by Zach Dean who hits .292 with 23 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples, a homer and 11 RBI. Nick Bruner follows hitting .260 with a team-leading 22 RBI.
Defensively, UTM has committed 66 errors in 32 games for a dismal .945 fielding percentage.
On the mound, the Skyhawks carry a 5.23 ERA as a staff, which is led by Justin Bryant, who is 3-3 with 29 strikeouts in 53.1 innings.
Red-Hot Koski
SIU leadoff man Kevin Koski (Schaumburg, Ill.) is currently on a 12-game hitting streak, the longest of any Saluki this season.
Koski has hit .314 (16-of-51) with four multiple-hit games, eight runs scored and a double during that stretch to date. Ironically, his streak began against UTM on Mar. 29.
Cademartori Has Good Week
Freshman Dean Cademartori (Norridge, Ill.) hit .500 (7-for-14) with six runs scored, five RBI, two doubles and a triple in four games for the Salukis last week. He narrowly missed hitting for the cycle when he went 3-for-4 with three runs, a double, triple and one RBI against Eastern Illinois (Apr. 12). Cademartori also boasted a .786 slugging percentage, as he extended his hitting streak to six games.
